Beyond the row of houses, to the north, began the fortified side of old Brașov. The Graft Canal, the zwingers, and the defensive walls with their towers and bastions are now among the city’s most beloved landmarks, visited by tourists and cherished by locals for leisurely walks. Five centuries ago, however, they formed part of Brașov’s remarkably sophisticated defensive system.
Between those walls, the city lived a second life. Not the lively world of bustling markets, crowded streets, and prosperous trade, but one that was quieter, harsher, and filled with mystery. The zwingers, the defensive corridors between the fortress walls, were entrusted to the craft guilds, whose members took up arms whenever the city came under threat. Cloth makers, tanners, weavers, blacksmiths, glovers, and countless other craftsmen were not only the source of Brașov’s prosperity, but also its steadfast defenders.
Behind the courtyard of MUREȘENILOR 9, towards the old walls, once stood the Printers’ Tower, part of Brașov’s medieval fortifications. Although the tower has disappeared, its name still resonates naturally with the cultural destiny of this house, where the stone walls and the printed word continue to preserve the city’s living memory.
