Johannes Honterus was one of the most influential personalities of the Transylvanian Renaissance, who in 1533 opened the first printing house in Kronstadt (as Brasov was then called), creating a cultural and religious movement that would transform the city into an important center of the Protestant Reformation.
Among the best-known prints from Honterus’ printing press (which can be seen in the Bastion of the Weavers) are “Rudimenta Cosmographica”, a treatise on geography recognized throughout Europe, and “Reformatio Ecclesiae Coronensis”, which brought Lutheran ideas to Brasov. Honterus passed away in 1549, leaving behind an important cultural legacy, decisive for the development of the city.
